There is another dimension that no résumé can fully capture, no number of years in practice can adequately summarize, and no academic title—however distinguished—can truly reflect. I am referring to the human side of medicine: the quality a patient discovers at the very moment when they are most in need of reassurance, trust, and the feeling that they are facing a doctor who sees the human being before seeing the medical condition. It is from this perspective that I chose to write abou Dr. Ahmed Allam, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon and Head of the Neurosurgery Department at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai—not as the subject of passing praise, nor as a gesture of courtesy prompted by a particular occasion or circumstance, but because of a genuine experience recently lived by a member of my family, one that I was close enough to witness in detail.

Some experiences compel us to speak honestly about the people involved in them. And, as those who know my work understand, I do not write about what I do not sincerely believe or feel. I neither exaggerate nor diminish the truth. When a member of a family falls ill, illness ceases to be an issue affecting the patient alone. Anxiety spreads throughout the family. The patient’s questions become their questions, and the success of treatment becomes a shared hope.

That anxiety becomes even more profound when the situation involves neurosurgery or spinal surgery. The patient and family then face a decision of considerable sensitivity and consequence. They look for a physician whose knowledge and experience they can trust, whose judgment they can rely upon, and with whom they can feel that their health is in safe hands.

This was where our experience with Egyptian neurosurgeon Dr. Ahmed Allam began. What drew our attention was not simply his specialized expertise or years of experience, but the way he dealt with the patient. There was attentive listening, clear explanation, calmness, and a genuine determination to ensure that the patient understood the nature of the condition and what to expect.

These may appear to be simple qualities, but to a patient standing at the threshold of an operating room, they carry immense value—something that can truly be understood only by those who have experienced illness and lived through its pain. A patient does not need only a doctor who knows what to do. A patient also needs a doctor who understands the fear that accompanies illness and knows how to ease it through calm words, clear explanations, and compassionate treatment.

In my personal view, this ability is not secondary to medical practice. The confidence a doctor gives a patient can itself become an important part of the healing journey.

Dr. Ahmed Allam has an academic and professional career worthy of recognition. He is a graduate of Cairo University’s Faculty of Medicine and holds both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery. His academic and professional career spans more than two decades, complemented by advanced training at a number of international medical institutions in neurosurgery, spinal surgery, and modern techniques in these highly specialized fields.

According to his published professional profile, Dr. Allam has performed more than 3,500 documented major surgical procedures, in addition to his continued interest in advanced techniques in neurosurgery and spinal surgery. These figures reflect an important part of his professional journey. Yet numbers alone cannot answer a far more human question:

How does a patient feel when sitting across from their doctor? This is precisely where the value of a real-life experience becomes evident. Years later, a person may forget the name of a medication they once took. Many details of a medical journey may gradually fade from memory. But it is not easy to forget a doctor who listened attentively, never made the patient feel rushed, explained what needed to be understood, and treated their fears with respect, compassion, and reassurance.

These details are not luxuries in medicine. They are an essential part of its true mission.

The human dimension was present throughout our experience with Dr. Ahmed Allam, alongside his scientific knowledge and professional expertise. It made us realize that the difference between a doctor who simply performs his duties efficiently and one who leaves a lasting impression on people’s lives may not lie in the amount of knowledge alone, but in how that knowledge is placed at the service of humanity. As an Egyptian journalist who has lived in the United Arab Emirates for more than twenty-five years, this experience carried an additional meaning for me.

An Egyptian doctor working outside his homeland does not carry his qualifications and professional experience alone. In one way or another, he also carries an image of his country, its educational institutions, its scientific tradition, and the values of its people.

Every success he achieves in his professional position therefore becomes, indirectly, part of the image he presents of his homeland. From this perspective, what we witnessed in Dr. Ahmed Allam was a source of genuine pride. He represents the Egyptian physician who offers a distinguished image of his country through knowledge, ethics, humanity, and dedication to his profession.

This is not a judgment based solely on personal impression, nor is it praise dictated by a personal relationship. It is an impression formed through a real experience—one we lived and witnessed at close range. It is also only fair to acknowledge that the outcome of any medical experience cannot be attributed to a physician alone. Healthcare is an integrated system in which doctors, nurses, technicians, administrators, and all those involved in the different stages of patient care play essential roles.

For this reason, I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai, with particular gratitude to the medical teams involved in the operating room, recovery, patient care, and post-operative follow-up. We experienced from them professionalism, attentiveness, and respectful treatment—qualities that leave a profound impression on both the patient and the family, particularly during moments when anxiety is at its highest and a kind word or genuine gesture of care becomes an important part of the human experience of treatment.

I am not writing these words to provide a medical assessment of Dr. Ahmed Allam; that is a matter for medical specialists and the relevant scientific and professional bodies. Nor am I writing merely to list his qualifications and titles, although his academic career is certainly deserving of recognition. I am writing this as a human testimony born of personal experience. Our experience with Dr. Ahmed Allam made us reconsider the broader meaning of the medical profession.

A doctor should not be measured solely by the knowledge he possesses or by the number of operations he has performed. A doctor should also be measured by the impact he leaves on the patient’s heart and mind, by the confidence he inspires, and by the way he preserves his humanity while practicing a profession directly connected to human life and safety.

An operation may end, and with it the long hours of anxiety and waiting. But some things do not end when treatment does. The kind word remains. The humane gesture remains. The sincere concern remains.

And what remains most vividly in memory is the image of a doctor who made the patient feel that they were a human being first—and a medical case second. That is precisely what we experienced with Dr. Ahmed Allam. And so, away from the language of courtesy or conventional praise, I say to him:

Thank you for being a doctor when we needed a doctor, and a human being when we needed a human being. And my deepest respect and appreciation to every physician who regards knowledge as a trust, medicine as a mission, and humanity as an essential part of professional excellence.

By Atef Al Batal Journalist and Managing Editor ,Member of the UAE Journalists Association.
